Too much vitamin K?

February 8th, 2010

I’ve heard that taking too much vitamin K orally can put your health at risk. I can understand thats why each multivitamin tablet only has 25% vitamin K, but the fresh spinach leaves that come in a bag (in the produce isle of the grocery store) have like 500% vitamin K (it says so on the nutrition label only on some packages) and well I eat them frequently. This might sound dumb, but would it be safe to eat the whole bag. lol. I’ve always just wondered that.

Yes dear this is very true I am on blood thinner and I ahve to watch how much green leafy veg. I eat.
They contain vitamin K

dog vitamins and general health?

February 7th, 2010

I have a 1 and 5 year old german shepherds. I would like to avoid giving them pills (glucosamine, multivitamins). Is there a more natural way to make sure they get proper nutrition so I reduce a chance of them having problems with their hips and bones in general? Thanks

Why don’t you look up glucosamine on Wikipedia? I just did, and it looks pretty natural to me. I started using it some months ago, just after I got a 10 year old rescue dog who had longstanding cruciate ligament damage in his back legs when I got him. He had trouble getting into my van when I got him, now he jumps in like it’s nothing, and bounces around like a young dog. It comes in a powder which is very easy to add to food. Next time I buy it, I’m going to get the version made for horses, it’s cheaper and fine for dogs, it says on the label.

And I’ll add another story to the first one. I had a 2 year old cat who developed severe respiratory problems. Every 4 to 6 weeks his lungs would fill up so he could hardly breathe and he was miserable. At the time, all the vet could offer was steroid shots, which worked well, but I was told they weren’t good as a continual treatment, so only give them when absolutely necessary. The prospect of a lifetime of this for the cat didn’t look good. By chance, I found a book on megavitamin therapy for cats. I decided there was nothing to lose, and started giving the cat 1,000mg of vitamin C daily, which is a huge dose. Six months went by and he didn’t need any steroids. I took him off the vitamin C, the filled lungs came back. Back on the 1000mg. I tried several times, same result. He stayed on the vitamin C for a little more than 2 years, and one day I stopped it again but the filled lungs never returned and he lived in perfect health till he was 17 and had kidney failure, very common in cats.

Moral of this: it’s almost impossible to find a perfect food, and if I had a breed prone to joint problems, as Shepherds are, I’d give the glucosamine as well as a very high quality food. Each animal is different, and some may do very well even on table scraps while others need more. Why not weight the odds in your dogs’ favour?

Could someone who knows about nutrition, and vitamins tell me if my list of vitamins looks ok (inside)?

February 7th, 2010

1 Men’s health formula multi vitamin tablet,
1 D-3 400 IU tablet,
2 100 mg. Korean Ginseng capsules,
1 Cranberry Fruit 1,500 mg. soft gel which also contains vitamin C,
1 Folic Acid 400 mcg. tablet,
1 C vitamin 500 mg.

And I also drink a small amount of apple cider vinegar each morning. And I drink a very small amount of extra virgin olive oil, a very small amount of it.

I also drink a cup of kava kava tea every day, and I’m thinking about drinking some chamomile tea.I also eat a banana for break fast, and usually a hamburger for lunch with cheese and mayonnaise on it. I’m trying to lose weight. Some times I also drink a diet poweraide that is supposed to have all the vitamin B complex in it. And I drink plenty of water.

Does this sound healthy? And can you give me any tips on dieting? I want to eat more leafy greens like spinach because I’ve heard they are one of the best things to include in your diet. I also sometimes but some lemon juice in my ice water, but I don’t have any at the time.

I’m on some psychotropic medication, and one anti depressant, and a muscles relaxer, and ultram for back and knee pain. But it’s not a controlled substance yet. And I take all of my medication like I’m supposed too. I’m just wanting to make sure my liver, kidneys and heart are healthy.

You may want to check about the interactions of some herbal supplements with your medicines, i.e. ginseng and especially kava kava.
As we all know some of our medicines can make weight loss almost impossible so I hope you have good luck with that.
One thing I do take that you may benefit from is fish oil 1000mg gels. It helps heart health, lowers triglycerides and is full of omega 3, which by the way spinach has as well and perhaps you are craving it.
Everything else you take sounds very healthy.

New Diet water and vitamins is it OK or not?

February 4th, 2010

I was going to go on this new diet, that I had made it consist of only drinking water and taking vitamins for my nutrition. I am not sure if it is going to work but I have tried it before and lost like 3lbs in one day. I was just wondering if I should go through it or will it screw with my health?

I am not seeing a doc for it.

No, please don’t do this! If you want to loose weight just eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise more. :)

Has anyone used vitamin drops with infants?

February 4th, 2010

Ok, so maybe I am a lil sceptical. But, I have two older kids who grew up just fine without vitamins, they got their nutrition through their food. Anyway, my youngest, 19weeks old, just had his four month check up and the doctor prescribed baby vitamin drops. My son is in perfect health… average height and weight. The doc said the AAP is advising that babies start taking these. It has vitamin D and flouride in it. Apparently where we live, they don’t flouridate the water, and the bottled water we drink has no flouride in it. These drops are supposed to have a 40% less occurrance of cavaties if taken.
I am just concerned because we seem to pump a lot of synthetic junk into our kids these days all in the name of ‘health’. My older sons never went to a dentist for a teeth cleaning until they were 6 yrs old each, and that is because when they were little the dentist wouldn’t even see them until 6 yrs old… now we got told that it is a preference and should be between when they get their first tooth and 2 yrs old… I am sorry but that sounds like I am lining someones pockets, not doing anything to benefit my child. Also, my kids never took vitamins because when they were younger it was felt that unless they were deficient somehow, you didn’t take them… now they prescribe them at 4 months old! So, I am just a little concerned about using these. I have seen over the years people who follow ‘trends’ with their infants and sometimes have a bad outcome. (Funny how the trend following doesnt happen with older kids, we must have it figured out by then, lol)
I just noticed with this baby that there are a lot of ’sheep’ out there. Vitamins, breast feeding, formula feeding, solids feeding, vaccines… wow … a lot of huge opinions to be had… I just remember with my older two that you just… well, parented. Did what you needed to do when you needed to do it. Now it is like you have to follow some kind of secret rule book with all these do’s and don’ts.. and vitamins for an infant… IDK… I just want to know if they are safe.

My question is… has anyone else used these kinds of drops – and have there been any side effects from them?

They have been recommended for breastfed babies for years during the winter months. You may opt to buy nursery water which contains flouride as an alternate

The Doc on Vitamin D3 Why a Cream you say??

February 4th, 2010

Transdermal Vitamin D3 1000 I.u. per gram.

When the sun hits skin free radicals are activated. The sunlight also activates an enzyme that breaks down fats in skin cells. This fat break down produces a chemical called arachidonic acid, the precursor to molecules that can inflame skin. We know that these inflammatory molecules accelerate the aging of skin. But healthy skin requires natural Vitamin D3. Kripps Sunshine Transdermal Vitamin D3 provides this essential vitamin to give you glowing, healthy looking skin. Kripps Sunshine Vitamin Dtransdermal cream is suitable for all types of skin.
